KONIALIAN'S KITCHEN: SUSTAINABLE MEALS FOR YOUR WALLET AND THE PLANET
WATER FOOTPRINT
The total water footprint of a crop is determined by adding up the quantities of blue, green, and grey water which were utilized.
Water Footprint: Infographics
Food and agriculture are some of the largest consumers of water, utilizing roughly 70-90% of the United States’ consumptive water. If producing food utilizes so much of our water, wouldn’t you want to eat things that require less so that there is enough water left for us to continue growing food in the future? To decrease the water component of one’s foodprint, it is advisable to eat food products that require less blue water or have a smaller overall water footprint.
Water Footprint: About
Blue Water
Consists of surface and groundwater which were removed from their original source and not returned.
Green Water
The amount of rainwater/precipitation consumed or stored in the soil and does not lead to run-off or replenish groundwater sources.
Grey Water
A theoretical quantity. It is the amount of freshwater needed tp dilute pollutants based on existing ambient water quality standards.
